How to Grow an Avocado Tree from Seed

Avocados have seen a meteoric rise in popularity in recent years but instead of discarding the stone after getting your fix of avocado toast, how about using it to grow an avocado tree?  We’ll show you how to grow an avocado tree below!

How to grow an avocado plant from seed

Step 1: Planting the avocado seed

  • Once you’ve finished your avocado, wash and dry the pit.
  • Fill a jar with water and then locate the broad end of the pit (this end will face downwards into the water).
  • Press three toothpicks into the pit to help suspend the avocado seed about an inch deep in the water.
  • Place the jar in a warm, sunny spot that’s out of direct sunlight.

Step 2: Potting your avocado tree

  • Within 4-6 weeks, your avocado seed should start to roots and a stem. If this happened within 8 weeks, start again with another seed.
  • When your stem is 6-8 inches tall, cut it back by half and let it grow again. When the roots have grown thick and the stem has leaves again, plant it in soil, leaving half the seed exposed above the soil.

Step 3: Caring for your avocado plant

  • Support your avocado tree’s stem by fastening it to a bamboo cane with VELCRO® Brand Plant Ties. They’re softer on stems than traditional plastic or wire plant ties and can be easily adjusted as your avocado tree grows.
  • Place your tree in a bright, sunny position such as on a windowsill.
  • Avocado plants don’t grow well in excessively wet or dry conditions. Water it freely in summer but less often in winter.
  • Apply a general purpose pot plant feed every 7 to 10 days during the spring, and at 6 to 8 week intervals for the rest of the year.
