Prep: How to Sew VELCRO® Brand Fasteners to Fabric

When you’re just about ready to sew, you don’t need anything fancy for your needle and thread. Any old needle will do the trick. Just make sure it matches the weight of your fabric, and pick a nice, strong polyester thread.

Adjust your sewing machine and needles to match your fabric for the best results. If you’re hand-sewing, you’ll only need to focus on which needle to use.

How to Sew VELCRO® Brand Fasteners

Now, let’s talk about sewing the VELCRO® Brand Fasteners on to the fabric. When you begin to sew, start sewing in the middle of the widest part. Make sure the seam allowance is as close to the edge as possible, around 2 mm. You’ll want to sew a straight stitch around all four sides to ensure it’s super secure.

Pro tip: If your VELCRO® Brand Fastener is over 2 inches wide, sew an ‘x’ through it to keep it extra secure.

How to Sew VELCRO® Brand Fasteners on a Garment

When attaching the fasteners to garments, cut the VELCRO® Brand Fasteners into 2-inch strips. To avoid sharp edges that might cause discomfort, round the edges.

Sewing the fastener is the same as above: sew around it with a 2 mm seam allowance.

When you sew the fastener to the garment, make sure the loop side (the soft side) faces your skin for added comfort, while the hook side (the scratchy side) should be oriented away from your skin.

How to Sew VELCRO® Brand Hook and Loop Tape to Lay Flat

Opt for one of our rectangular packs to achieve a flat appearance with the VELCRO® Brand Sew On Fasteners.

Sew a wider piece so the seam lies beside each other rather than overlapping. Sew only half of the hook and loop set to do this, reducing bulkiness. This is ideal for smaller projects and is particularly useful for doll clothes.

How to Wash VELCRO® Brand Sew On Fasteners

Before throwing your sewing projects in the wash, make sure the fasteners are closed. This will help its longevity and maintain its performance. Don’t forget to close the fastener when you throw the project into the dryer.

There you go, the lowdown on how to sew with VELCRO® Brand Fasteners. Happy sewing!
