SHARK COSTUME

Shark Costume: Blue Dress Costume

Look sharp this Halloween and make a shark costume using a few simple supplies. Try out this DIY – we promise you’ll look swimmingly good!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • VELCRO® Brand Sew On fasteners
  • One piece of 5-cm dense foam (chair cushion)
  • 1 meter blue fleece
  • ½ meter of pink fleece
  • One sheet of black felt
  • One sheet of white felt
  • Pins or clips
  • Fabric-friendly pen or chalk
  • Sewing machine

SHARK FINS

  1. Print, cut, and assemble the pattern. Trace the shark fin pieces on foam and then cut them out.
  2. Using the blue fleece, cut out the fin pieces again. Pin together as shown here and sew with a 3/5 cm inseam.
  3. Clip a 12 cm piece of VELCRO® Brand Hook as shown and sew along the red dashed line.
  4. Trim the excess and clip the corners. Turn out the fin and stuff one of the foam pieces inside. Use a ladder stitch to close the fin. Repeat these steps with the hat, back, and remaining arm fin.

SLEEVES

  1. Trace and cut the sleeve out of the blue fleece fabric. Pin 5 inches of the VELCRO® Brand Sew On Loop to the opposite corner of the thumb hole and sew.
  2. Fold the sleeves in half so the long edges meet the fastener. Then sew the sleeves shut.
  3. Attach each fin to the sleeves.

SHARK HAT

  1. Cut one front and back piece from the pink and blue fleece fabric. Pin together and sew along the dashed line shown here with a 1 cm inseam.
  2. Turn the hat to sew the “V” shut. Pinch the “V” together (right sides of the front together, right sides of the back together), clip, and sew in one continuous seam.
  3. Turn out the blue piece and attach 12 cm of the VELCRO® Brand Sew On Loop to the top of the hat. Sew around all four sides.
  4. Next, turn the blue hat inside out and the pink hat right side out. Stuff, the pink piece inside the blue, so the right sides are touching.
  5. Clip and sew along the edges of the hat, leaving a few inches in the back to turn out.
  6. Turn out the hat and add a top stitch to give a finished look. Now sew up the hole in the back.
  7. Cut out the teeth and eyes and hand sew them onto the hat.
  8. Attach the fin to the top of the hat.

FINISH THE LOOK

Sew a 30 cm strip of VELCRO® Brand Sew On Tape down the back of the blue dress and attach the fin to that strip. Add the hat and gloves. Now, you’re ready to swim to your Halloween festivities!
